The close of the Slow Road 2010 ended spectactularly….. early!
Yes, indeed the lack of financial support was the downfall in my eagerly planned tour to taste the titanic efforts of the UK’s food & drink producers. Although not a complete failure and not an utter disaster… well, not personally anyway.
I have made contact with some incredibly delightful foodie folk and made friends with people involved (or otherwise) with Slow Food. It was wonderfully successful in that respect. But, again, yes I didn’t actually get very far around the route of the tour. To Canterbury in fact.

I’ll fill in a milleage count when I do my expenses next week. (20p a mile you know, it all adds up)
…
So what’s next?
Well, a little bird whispered in my ear something about an e-mail, sent from the leader of the North Yorkshire Slow Food group, regarding an idea she had for…. are you sitting comfortably?… (‘cos I wasn’t for a few weeks)… …a Slow Road Relay!
Now that sounds exciting!
A team or select member from each Convivium joining us (and any other brave soul with appropriate resources; of which I have a much clearer idea of now!) on a ride from their Convivium to the next. And so on, and so on…
Image it? an epic journey… with people making discoveries of their own counties and the next… to really feel what it’s like, to taste what’s happening. Passing on information and love of local food with each passing of Convivium. Asking questions as simply as; what is local food and how easy is it for local people to access?
A bigger tour, with more publicity and involving people from across the spectrum of what is slow living and local hospitality. Sustrans rangers? Couchsurfers? Cycling fraternities? (although I find lycra a truly worrying sight) Transition Town Movements? and, of course, Slow Food members themselves?
Aren’t you excited just reading about the idea of it? I know I am.
…
Well, all in good time… there’ll be something in place soon for you to register your interest and your availability to join the Slow Road on a paricular leg of the ‘Slow Road Relay 2011′.
A good idea would be to show you what suppliers/producers we’re planning to visit along each route too, so you can judge how tasty you think it may be… (tbc)

I really believe this is a wonderful project and, although I failed personally in 2010, the idea will succeed and can grow into an International event with the support it needs.
all in good time
